Hajj 2022 latest: one million head to Mina for Saudi Arabia's first post-Covid pilgrimage

Pilgrims have begun their journeys to Mina for the first day of Hajj. They will stay there for most of the day and evening before the Day of Arafat on Friday.

Travelling to Mina's huge city of tents, which can hold more than 2.6 million people, marks the first stage of Hajj. Pilgrims must stay at the site while performing rituals such as the stoning of the devil at the Jamarat while performing Hajj

Saudi Arabia has permitted pilgrims from abroad to participate this year after two years of limiting the pilgrimage to people within the kingdom owing to the coronavirus pandemic.

Last year, numbers were limited to 60,000 because of the virus.

Hajj pilgrims travelling from abroad are expected to constitute 85 per cent of those who perform the rituals this year.

One million pilgrims descend on Mina for largest Hajj since Covid pandemic

One million Muslim pilgrims are set to arrive in Saudi Arabia’s tent city of Mina on Thursday for the largest Hajj since the coronavirus pandemic strictly reduced access to one of Islam’s five pillars.

Those performing the Hajj this year must be under 65, vaccinated against the coronavirus and have tested negative for Covid-19 within 72 hours of travel.

Soon after the dawn Fajr prayers are performed in Makkah, pilgrims will travel to Mina, about eight kilometres away.

Emergency centres serving pilgrims

The Saudi Red Crescent Authority (SRCA) has announced that more than 374 health practitioners are in full readiness at 37 emergency centres to serve the pilgrims in Mina during the day of Tarwiyah.

The SRCA has allocated more than 87 ambulances in various locations in Mina as well as voluntary teams to support the emergency teams, in addition to deploying supportive medical control units to provide medical advice and necessary support.

Arab Parliament Speaker, Adel Al Asoomi, praised the extraordinary efforts of Saudi Arabia’s leadership to facilitate all services provided to pilgrims.
“These efforts reflect the care given by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and his wise government represented by the ministries and sectors to facilitate the performance of the Hajj ritual,” Mr Al Asoomi said in a statement on Thursday.
He highlighted the precautionary and preventive measures taken to ensure the health and safety of the pilgrims, so that they can perform their ritual in a secure and comfortable environment
Mr Al Asoomi added that Saudi Arabia has provided an inspiring example or competent crisis management after two exceptional seasons impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, as the kingdom proved its ability to face any potential crises that might face Hajj pilgrims under challenging circumstances.
